New
sensor chip offers cost-effective multi point monitoring in Food and Drink
manufacturing
• Optical sensor offers highly sensitive refractive index measurement
• Easily networked for multipoint in-line process monitoring
A novel refractive index (RI) measurement technology, initially developed
for counter bio terrorism applications by university spin-out Stratophase,
is offering a cost-effective flexible solution for integrated process control
and quality assurance testing in food and drink manufacturing.
The Stratophase optical sensing chips can be used in the laboratory and
for point testing in the factory. Multiple sensors can also be networked
over large areas to a single readout unit, offering economical multipoint
measurements. As manufacturers move away from end-of-line quality checks
to in-line quality assurance, the flexible configuration possibilities,
the elimination of batch testing and the realtime process information offered
by the Stratophase technology make it a versatile and attractive solution.
The robust, self-referenced sensor chips are suitable for use in any liquid
processing application including water monitoring and fermentation.
RI measurements are regularly used in the food and drink manufacturing process
to gauge sugar levels as part of the quality assurance process. With accuracy
greater than one part per million the highly sensitive Stratophase chip
makes measuring even the minor RI variations caused by sweeteners and other
ingredients possible.
The ability to make multiwavelength measurements at a single point also
offers the potential to 'compositional finger print' liquids, further increasing
the depth of information available to the user.
Stratophase has developed the SpectroSens technology based on proven science
from telecoms, optics and biotech. The technology also has applications
in pharmaceutical manufacturing, industrial processes and life sciences
R&D.
