Robust
new technology for biochemical detection to debut at Pittcon 2008
March 3rd, 2008, New Orleans: A new technique developed by Stratophase
for the accurate measurement of changes in the refractive index of liquids
in industrial process applications will be demonstrated for the first time
on Booth 1030 at Pittcon 2008.
The new SpectroSens technology is ideal for use in demanding industrial
environments, offering robust real-time measurement of liquids, chemicals
and biological contaminants. Spectosens sensors can be used on-line or in
the laboratory in any liquid processing application including petro-chemical
processing, fuel, water monitoring and fermentation.
Refractive index is a useful indicator of changes in liquid composition.
It can be used in a wide variety of process control applications, to detect
contamination, and / or for quality assurance. Key advantages of the SpectroSens
technology over other measurement techniques are that it delivers simultaneous
multiple discrete readings in real time for reliable, plant-wide monitoring
and control.
SpectroSens is an optical device without electrical power, making it fundamentally
safe for use in flammable environments, as there is no potential source
of ignition. This makes it a highly cost-effective option for use in hazardous
areas, or with flammable chemicals.
The SpectroSens sensor measures the change in the refractive index of a
liquid as it passes across the surface of the optical chip with a precision
better than one part in one million. It directly measures chemical substances
via multiple refractive index measurements and detects the presence of biological
entities in the liquid, using antibodies attached to the sensor surface.
It produces simultaneous multiple discrete readings to provide more reliable
measurement and detection.
Stratophase is a spin out company from the University of Southampton. The
company has developed SpectroSens technology based on proven science from
telecoms, optics and biotech. It is capable of detecting all classes of
biological target, including proteins, viruses and bacteria, as well as
changes in chemical composition of liquids.
