Laser Munich
Date: June 15th- 18th

British optics companies launch innovations at German trade show

A group of British optics companies are heading for Laser Munich in Germany, from June 15 to 18 2009, armed with world leading technology and products which are enabling their businesses to grow despite the recession. University spin outs, start-ups and established names from all over the South of England will be attending the World of Photonics, which is internationally recognised as the most important multi-discipline European photonics event in the calendar.

The UK is an internationally recognised centre of optics and photonics excellence and the South East of England is home to over 200 such companies. The sector is financially strong, and companies such as Fiberlogix, which has developed a novel ‘'All In Line Fiber Power Monitor' for high power laser systems working at 1064nm Wavelength, are bucking the global recession with new international distribution deals and double-digit growth over the last year.

John Lincoln from the South East Photonics Network said, "The range and quality of optics and photonics technology coming out of the UK at the moment is first class. The business success in a difficult global market is also an important sign of how harnessing our competencies in light innovation can be of enormous benefit, not just to end users but to the economy."”

Some of the newest UK businesses represented at the show are award-winning two year old start-up PhotonStarLED with their unique approach to LED lighting technology and Covesion, a Stratophase and University of Southampton spin out – launched in January 2009.

Photonstar's patented next generation ChromaWhite technology combines excellent thermal management and proprietary optical colour mixing technology in an intelligent, colour tunable luminaire. The result is a multi function, high illumination grade, performance technology at low cost.

Covesion has combined the established wavelength conversion product line from Stratophase with new intellectual property from the Optoelectronics Research Centre at the University of Southampton to introduce new products based on magnesium oxide doped lithium niobate (MPPLN), offering higher power handling capabilities and lower operating temperatures than standard PPLN.
