Perpetuum’s PMG17 Energy Harvester is ATEX-certified for hazardous environments

Perpetuum launches the intrinsically safe ATEX version of the industrial
PMG17 vibration energy harvester, for safe working in Zone 0, 1 or 2 environments.
The microgenerator that enables wireless, battery-free sensing for condition
monitoring and asset management applications has been given an ATEX EC-Type
Examination Certificate and a IECEx Draft Certificate of Conformity. These
certificates, when combined with pending QA certifications, will allow Perpetuum
to supply the PMG17 to its customers with Ex ia IIC T4 markings.
The new intrinsically safe PMG17 energy harvester has been designed and
certified for use in hazardous oil, gas, chemical and petrochemical environments
where flammable gases may be present. Perpetuum’s customers are now
free to incorporate energy harvesting technology (and hence remove batteries)
into wireless sensor nodes for use in these hazardous areas for the first
time.
“This certification is an important step forward for our customers
with hazardous environments,” says Dr Stephen Roberts, Technical Manager,
Perpetuum. “Operators in hazardous industrial environments can now
deploy energy harvesters in their wireless plant monitoring equipment, allowing
them to significantly reduce down-time and save thousands of pounds.
The PMG17 transforms the kinetic energy of machine vibration into electrical
current, which is sufficient to power complete wireless sensor nodes, including
sensors, micro processors and 802.15.4 transceivers. The ATEX-approved PMG17
microgenerator benefits from the same rigorous design and build processes
that are a feature of all Perpetuum’s microgenerators, making it a
cost-effective and reliable solution for hazardous environment applications.
A fully-working wireless sensor node demonstration system powered by a PMG17
will be in operation at ISA Expo in Houston, Texas 2-4 October in booth
2926 (http://www.isa.org/expotemplate.cfm). The demonstration will show
the transmission of motor condition and temperature data over the 802.15.4
wireless protocol.
