Morgan Advanced Ceramics launches new large diameter ceramic bearing offering better stability for hip replacements

Morgan Advanced Ceramics (MAC) will be showing its new range of 36mm diameter HIP Vitox® alumina ceramic femoral heads and acetabular cups, on stand 817 at MEDTEC China 2007. The new larger size can be used in hip replacement surgery and is offered in response to increasing demand from customers for larger diameter products for better joint stability.

Recurrent dislocation can be a problem for some people following hip replacement surgery. Research is increasingly demonstrating that larger femoral heads reduce the likelihood of dislocation by providing a more stable joint. The addition of the 36mm product to the MAC range offers surgeons all the durability advantages of the HIP Vitox® alumina material, in a large diameter.

The larger products offer greater system strength than smaller diameter products, reducing the possibility of product fracture even further. They also feature a larger range of offsets to ±5mm, where existing 28 mm products have only allowed ±3.5mm. This gives the surgeon more options and greater flexibility during the operating procedure.

MAC’s HIP Vitox® alumina is a purpose-developed bioceramic material that exhibits exceptionally low wear rates compared to metal or polyethylene. It can be used in alumina on alumina ceramic systems or in conjunction with a polyethylene acetabular cup.

Also on show will be the company’s existing 104-pin feed-thru, which is used in drug delivery applications, and houses 104 pins in 2.5cm diameter, enabling medical device manufacturers to design smaller, less intrusive devices.
