NXP Semiconductors’ Southampton site has been named one of the most enterprising places in the UK, in the Enterprising Britain competition. A year after opening its gates to high tech companies and local community regeneration schemes, the NXP site, now named the Millbrook Technology Campus, has been recognised by Make Your Mark and Department for Business, Enterprise & Regulatory Reform (BERR) for its positive impact on business and enterprise in the local community.

On 25th June the competition judges, including entrepreneur Peter Jones (from TV’s The Dragon’s Den), took a tour of the site in preparation for the next round of the competition which will decide the overall winner.

Enterprising Britain is a nationwide competition, run by Make Your Mark and BERR. Its aim is to recognise areas of enterprise excellence: those places that have created jobs, forged links in communities, and improved the local climate for businesses and residents.

Submitted in collaboration with NXP’s Millbrook Technology Campus partners, including the University of Southampton, Solent Skill Quest Ltd and Southampton City Council, the Millbrook Technology Campus competition entry outlined the positive impact campus activities have had on its economically deprived surrounding area.

In addition to strong links with academic institutions the campus offers a unique ecosystem for young and growing technology companies. Among its offerings are cleanroom facilities, laboratory and workshop space and access to some of NXP’s highly specialised electronic testing equipment.

Steve Delaney from NXP Semiconductors said, “The Millbrook Technology Campus is a project that has benefited the local community, local technology companies and for us it makes total business sense. In addition to keeping our own work environment vibrant with technology and ideas, we are engaging with local schools and tapping into some fantastically innovative start-ups from the local higher education institutions. We believe we are building a lasting legacy for this area where poverty of opportunity has been a problem for some time.”

The 12 projects that have been short-listed were nominated by each of the nine Regional Development Agencies and three Devolved Administrations, and will compete against each other at the UK final in October to be crowned the national winner of Enterprising Britain 2008. The competition is also used to identify the UK entries to the European Enterprise Awards later this year.

The judging panel noted that the Millbrook Technology Campus “Not only shows a continued commitment to enterprise, but has also identified a successful collaboration, which benefits a deprived area of Southampton, creating a thriving hub of enterprise and innovation.”
