Global manufacturer of advanced cable testing and certification equipment, IDEAL INDUSTRIES, has introduced the new LANTEK® 6A. The latest addition to IDEAL’s popular LANTEK® series of handheld test equipment, LANTEK® 6A is the first cable tester fully compliant with the draft Category 6a standard (TIA/EIA-568-B.2-10 / ISO/IEC 11801:2002 2nd Ed.), which is expected to be ratified in early 2006. Several manufacturers have already announced the availability of Category 6a compliant cable and components to support the operation of 10 Gigabit Ethernet (10GBASE-T) over either shielded (STP) or un-shielded twisted pair (UTP) cabling.

The innovative and user-friendly LANTEK® 6A operates at frequencies of up to 500MHz enabling it to fully certify Category 6a installations. 10GBASE-T technology is being driven as a straightforward upgrade path for Gigabit Ethernet backbones and makes provision for linking Ethernet Local Area Networks (LANs) to Metropolitan and Wide Area Networks (MANs and WANs). Thanks to its ability to process up to 10 billion bits per second, 10GBASE-T is also common in data centre applications for fast processing of large amounts of critical data.

As with all LANTEK® testers, LANTEK® 6A employs IDEAL’s patented measurement system thereby allowing standard patch cords to be used for link testing instead of bulky and expensive test adapters. All patch cord effects are removed during the field calibration process so both channel and permanent link certification of Category 6a is possible without having to change adapters or reconfiguring the tester. This feature also reduces cost of ownership because users need only replace patch cords, rather than the entire test adapter or personality module. LANTEK® 6A also features a unique new DUALmode™ test function allowing two different certification tests to be performed simultaneously on the same cable, saving considerable time and effort. For example, CAT 6a and ISO Class Ea permanent link test results could be displayed on screen with only one press of the autotest button.

The LANTEK® 6A also supports IDEAL’s FIBERTEK™ and TRACETEK™ fibre accessories, enabling it to perform Singlemode and Multimode insertion loss measurements and distance-to-fault troubleshooting.
