Improved Visual Fault Finder saves installers time and money when troubleshooting fibre optic cabling

.IDEAL INDUSTRIES has launched an improved version of its popular Visual Fault Finder. The new VFF5 has been redesigned to help installers more easily locate breaks, poor mechanical splices and damaged connectors in fibre optic cables. The tool is ideal as a stand-alone basic troubleshooting device, or can be used in conjunction with an OTDR to pinpoint faults. As well as improving the VFF5’s functionality, IDEAL is also able to offer the tool at a new competitive price of only £165.

The hand-held, battery-powered VFF5 tool works by projecting a bright red light into a fibre optic cable. VFF5 is equipped with a high-power, long-life, 650nm laser diode which operates either in Continuous (CW) or Modulated (MOD; 1Hz Pulse) mode. The operator inspects the length of cable and if a glowing or blinking red light area can be seen, this indicates a break in the cable. The tool’s improved battery life means it will now last for up to 80 hours in continuous mode.

VFF5 can be used with single-mode and multi-mode cable, over distances of approximately 3km (multi-mode) and 4km (single-mode). The unit is fitted with a universal 2.5mm connector, enabling it to support ST, SC and FC interfaces without additional adapters. VFF5 is an excellent aide to technicians terminating mechanical splices or internal-splice style connectors where leaking light is an indicator of a poor fibre cleave, or other misalignment. The tool also assists in the termination of ‘no-polish’ connectors by indicating proper cleave alignment in connectors such as the MTRJ.

An improved mechanical design featuring rugged metal housing and water resistant over-moulding improves durability, user-grip and prevents rolling (essential for bench top use when terminating mechanical splices or internal-splice connectors).

“At only £165, IDEAL’s VFF5 is one of the most durable, functional and cost-effective fibre troubleshooting tools on the market,” explains Tony Kumeta, Business Manager, IDEAL INDUSTRIES. “The VFF5 is the perfect hand-held tool to verify continuity, test and find breaks in fibre links and locate pinched fibre strands in termination cabinets, or anywhere fibre optic cables are terminated and subject to mechanical damage.”

The VFF5 Visual Fault Finder is available through Ideal Authorised Distributors now. For more information please visit www.idealindustries.co.uk or contact IDEAL on 01925 444 446 or Ideal_UK@idealindustries.com.
