Multiple web site strategies are costing organisations thousands of pounds
• Organisations looking for recession-proof marketing need to make more intelligent use of online resources,” says Fusion Workshop’s Chris Short
Organisations spending upwards of £100k per year on the hosting and management of multiple web sites and intranets could be wasting up to two thirds of their budget, says Chris Short, Managing Director of specialist web consultancy Fusion Workshop.
In uncertain economic times, managers must take difficult decisions about best use of marketing spend. While there is often a good case to be made for increasing online presence at the expense of other channels, Short says that many organisations could enrich their web sites and make significant savings within a matter of months simply by investing in a single, industry-proven, flexible content management system (CMS).
“Organisations that commission multiple agencies to design and build a number of different web sites and intranets in support of multiple brands, sales functions or as support sites are missing the point,” says Short. “There are huge management and hosting savings to be made by managing them using one highly functional CMS that allows different sites to be presented.”
This approach means that organisations can effectively future-proof their web sites. Content can be shared between sites easily and the need for costly revisions and retrofitting is avoided.
“What managers often seem to misunderstand is that back-end consolidation does not have to mean any less differentiation in brand, look, feel or functionality. A single well-considered CMS strategy actually releases budget, allowing managers to focus more on the design and content of each site, and less on maintenance. There is nothing to stop organisations continuing to use multiple design agencies if they so choose. Far from limiting diversity, it allows it to flourish.”
Fusion Workshop works with CMS partner, Immediacy, to develop and manage web solutions. Fusion Workshop has delivered CMS customisation and implementation for both the private and public sectors since 1999.
Short maintains that a consolidated CMS approach using a solution such as Immediacy is the only really sustainable approach. “This way organisations can be sure that their all their online resources are secure, compliant and flexible. For example, they can be accessed by mobile devices and integrated with organisation databases. It is online marketing without limits.”
