Fordway short-listed for second green IT award
23 November 2009 - ICT infrastructure Fordway Solutions' work with the London Borough of Hillingdon has been shortlisted for the 'green IT' category of the prestigious e-Government National Awards 2009. This nomination follows Fordway's success in last month's 2009 Channel Network Awards, at which the company won the 'Green Solution of the Year' award for the same project.
Fordway worked with Hillingdon's IT team to install a Compellent storage area network (SAN) and VMware platform to virtualise the Borough's storage and server environment. This met the Borough's need for an effective and greener way to handle its rapidly growing data storage requirements, providing data prioritisation and management, driving down costs, providing increased resilience and reducing power consumption.
This project was recognised because the new storage solution provided both annual financial savings of almost £80,000 - helping Hillingdon deliver improved value for money to residents - and a massive reduction in carbon emissions. It has enabled the Borough to reduce its carbon footprint by 20 per cent over 18 months.
Hillingdon's assistant head of ICT Roger Bearpark has spoken about how the project generated these savings at events such as the IT Directors' Forum. "As a local government organisation, Hillingdon is fairly prudent with the money we spend, and this solution represents great value for money," said Roger.
The e-Government National Awards highlight the services which improve citizen and business transactions with councils, central government, the NHS and other public sector organisations. They are supported by the Cabinet Office, the Society of Local Authority Chief Executives and the Society of IT Management. Winners will be announced at a Ministerial dinner on 20th January 2010.
The Channel Network (CN) award recognises excellence across the entire UK reseller and integrator community. The 2009 award is Fordway's second successive win - in 2008 the company won the Data Management Solution of the Year category for the work it carried out at gm2 Logistics, a warehousing and logistics firm specializing in paper distribution.
Richard Blanford, managing director of Fordway, comments: "We are delighted to be short-listed for the e-Government award and to accept the CN Award with the London Borough of Hillingdon's IT team. It recognises their hard work and commitment in delivering an IT strategy that reduces both their costs and their carbon footprint.
"A green IT strategy does not have to be expensive, but can and should be the result of optimising a company's IT infrastructure. Every IT team should be able to convince their directors that it is worth 'going green' by showing the cost savings and business benefits that will be achieved."
