It’s easy being green
• IT company creates environmentally-friendly office in Surrey

. .

The office, which is one of four locations in the UK from which the company operates, houses up to 40 staff and was originally an early 1990s build that has now undergone complete refurbishment.

“The objective was to minimise our environmental footprint,” said Richard Blanford, Managing Director, Fordway Solutions Ltd. “Both as an office and as a business.”

The project has involved a variety of energy-saving and eco-friendly measures including: A centrally-controlled air conditioning system (80% more energy efficient than the existing system); An automated lighting system which reacts to physical movement (reducing emissions when facilities are empty); Individual metering per floor (to manage and tune power to local occupants); Low water use toilets and timed heaters.

The new office also includes a shower facility to provide staff with the option to cycle or run to work.

“I decided if we were going to invest in making the office environmentally-friendly that I would also contribute,” said Blanford who now regularly runs to and from work from his home in Guildford.

Fordway helps its customers in both the public and private sectors to run ‘greener’ operations through their use of IT. Recent projects include a datacentre makeover for the Royal Horticultural Society and a new data storage solution for charity Comic Relief.

The company has been headquartered in Surrey since it began in 1991.
