Edwards appoint new European general manager to support growth
CRAWLEY, UK (22 February 2010) – Leading vacuum technology company Edwards has appointed Wolfgang Binder as General Manager for Europe to lead the company’s growth in the European semiconductor, solar and general vacuum markets. He will be responsible for European sales, service and the development of specialised technologies and applications for European customers.
Binder joins Edwards from Applied Materials, where he spent 14 years managing the company’s key account teams at AMD, Infineon and Qimonda. Prior to this he worked in a number of roles at IBM in Sindelfingen (Germany). He was also Programme Director at IBM’s European HQ in Paris (France) and spent several years in the company’s development laboratory in East Fishkill (US). He has extensive experience of the German market and of working with key Edwards customers.
Binder’s appointment comes as Edwards launches a series of new smaller, higher performing pumps with lower power requirements into the semiconductor, solar, LED and industrial sectors.
“Our new generation products will enable our customers to reduce their overall costs and will help the environment,” said Nigel Hunton, CEO of Edwards. “Europe, and especially Germany, represent 25 per cent of our business, and Wolfgang’s appointment will help us work closely with these key customers and provide them with powerful new vacuum and abatement solutions.”
One of the first key activities for Binder will be the launch of the new iXH and GXS dry pumps across Europe. These pumps represent significant performance improvements in terms of running costs, footprint and process capability.

Neuer General Manager Europa bei Edwards zur Unterstützung des Wachstums
CRAWLEY, UK (22. Februar 2010) – Edwards, ein führendes Unternehmen derVakuumtechnik, hat Wolfgang Binder zum General Manager Europa ernannt, um das Unternehmen in den Bereichen Halbleiter- und Solartechnik sowie allen anderen Anwendungen der Vakuumtechnik zu neuem Wachstum zu führen. Er wird für Vertrieb und Service verantwortlich sein, außerdem für die Entwicklung spezieller Technologien und deren Anwendungen bei europäischen Kunden.
Wolfgang Binder kommt von Applied Materials, wo er 14 Jahre als Manager für die Key Account Teams des Unternehmens bei AMD, Infineon und Qimonda verantwortlich war. Zuvor hatte er verschiedene Positionen bei IBM Sindelfingen inne, außerdem betreute er als Programme Director das IBM-Produktprogramm von der europäischen IBM-Zentrale in Paris aus und arbeitete mehrere Jahre im IBM-Entwicklungslabor in East Fishkill (USA). Zudem verfügt er über umfassende Erfahrungen im deutschen Markt und in der Zusammenarbeit mit Schlüsselkunden von Edwards.
Zeitgleich mit der Ernennung von W. Binder erfolgt die Markteinführung einer neuen Baureihe kompakter Vakuumpumpen für die Halbleiter-, Solarzellen- und LED-Fertigung sowie zahlreiche andere Industriezweige. Diese Pumpen kombinieren höhere Leistung mit kleineren Abmessungen und niedrigerer Energieaufnahme.
„Die Pumpen der neuen Generation setzen unsere Kunden in die Lage, Kosten zu senken und die Produktion umweltfreundlicher zu gestalten“, sagt Nigel Hunton, CEO von Edwards. „In Europa, mit dem Schwerpunkt Deutschland, tätigen wir 25% unseres Umsatzes, und die Ernennung von Wolfgang Binder wird uns helfen, enger mit Schlüsselkunden zusammenzuarbeiten und ihnen leistungsfähige Vakuum- und Abgasmanagement-Systeme anzubieten“.
Eine der ersten Aufgaben von Wolfgang Binder wird die Markteinführung der neuen iXH und GXS Trockenläufer in Europa sein. Diese Pumpen zeichnen sich durch erhebliche Verbesserungen bei den Betriebskosten, den Abmessungen und der Prozesstauglichkeit aus.
„Gerade in dieser spannenden Zeit freue ich mich sehr auf die neue Herausforderung bei Edwards; das Unternehmen verfügt über ein hervorragendes Produktportfolio, und die Neuentwicklungen, die wir demnächst präsentieren, werden unsere führende Marktposition festigen“, betont Wolfgang Binder.
