Wolverhampton’s new Heart Centre chooses a centralised UPS configuration from Chloride Power Protection

.The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust has selected a centralised uninterruptible power supply (UPS) configuration from Chloride Power Protection at the trust’s new £60 million Heart Centre at New Cross Hospital, Wolverhampton. This UPS configuration ensures that the mission critical loads are supported 24/7. The UPS was delivered and installed in March 2004.

The UPS project, designed and specified by consultants Couch Perry & Wilkes Partnership and engineered by Chloride Power Protection, involves the building, installation and commissioning of two EDP90/250kVA UPS units.

“This is the largest and most complex building on our site and is a state-of-the-art Heart Centre”, states Mike Babb, Assistant Director – Estates and Facilities at the Royal Wolverhampton Hospitals NHS Trust. “We will have patients on critical life support systems and so wanted one of the UPS system market leaders to supply the units for this critical building”.

Using the UPS units in a centralised configuration means New Cross Hospital can expect to benefit from savings in ‘whole life’ costs. It is expected that the reliability and efficiency of the Chloride Power Protection solution, when compared to cheaper alternatives and a decentralised set up, will allow the hospital to make significant savings in maintenance and running costs over the next 20-30 years.

M&E contractor NG Bailey placed the order for two Chloride Power Protection EDP90 series/250kVA units at New Cross Hospital, which will be the most modern and best equipped in the country. The 175-bed centre, employing more than 200 staff, will provide coronary care and surgery for approximately 1500 patients per year by 2006.

“In the early stages, the tender was based on traditional distributed UPS and Isolated power supply (IPS) configurations as seen in many other hospital sites,” explains Alan Fry, Technical Support Director, Chloride Power Protection. “With our expertise in this field we demonstrated the benefits that could be gained by using a centralised configuration. Historically, the hospital has used small <10kVA UPS systems to populate the theatres and high dependency units (HDU) and dealt with the complicated and costly maintenance involved. This centralised configuration is a major step forward for the NHS in UPS protection.”

New Cross Hospital’s system is also connected to Chloride’s LIFE.net facility, giving it 24/7 continuous remote monitoring. Analysis of UPS performance and power supply trends act as early warning systems, which can be used to enable the swift identification of power related issues before they become a threat to electrical equipment protected by UPS.

Chloride Power Protection is a leading provider of UPS solutions for the UK healthcare services industry. This major new contract reinforces Chloride’s reputation for delivering life-long power protection for mission critical applications in major installations throughout the world.
